AI-Boosted Automated Painting

We are proud to be part of the incredibly innovative AUTOPAINT project. The vision is to revolutionize industrial surface treatment through next-generation digital workflows.

By integrating cutting-edge simulation technology in IPS Virtual Paint with advanced AI algorithms, the project aims to enable a fully automated and optimized painting process.

What is Autopaint?

Project Partners

  • Fraunhofer-Chalmers Centre for Industrial Mathematics
  • RISE Research Institutes of Sweden
  • Industrial Path Solutions – IPS

  • Saab
  • IKEA
  • and us, Proton Finishing AB

The Swedish automotive industry has set ambitious goals for 2030 for surface treatment:

20–50% reduction in paint material

25% lower energy consumption

75% less waste

To achieve these goals, cutting-edge digital solutions are required, and we are both proud and happy that the Fraunhofer-Chalmers Centre, together with a strong consortium of partners, has secured major funding from VINNOVA’s Advanced Digitalisation program for the project “The Virtual PaintShop – AI-Boosted Automated Painting (AUTOPAINT)”.

The vision is to revolutionize industrial surface treatment through next-generation digital workflows.

By integrating state-of-the-art simulation technology in IPS Virtual Paint with advanced AI algorithms, the project aims to enable a fully automated and optimized painting process.

How does it work?

A paint process engineer simply inputs the available painting equipment (robots, applicators, materials), required paint thickness, and cycle time – and the simulation software automatically generates an optimized robot program and process parameters. This will make it possible to optimize processes in terms of quality, productivity, and sustainability.

This project builds on world-leading simulation solutions for both wet paint and powder coating applications and will push the boundaries of AI-driven manufacturing.

By combining physics-based AI methods with real-world data from us, we are shaping the future of digitalized, energy-efficient, and waste-free surface treatment.

Being part of this project is both exciting and an honor. Innovation and collaboration will shape the way forward.
Enjoy succeeding together!
